Got A Fever of 103 . . .

Lukas is feeling under the weather the last few days. He is teething (all four molars at once) and running a slight fever, with lots of pain. We have been dosing him with Tylenol to ease the pain, to good success. However, yesterday he was warm and lethargic after daycare. He was running a fever of 101F degrees. We had been there before, so we gave him a sponge bath, Tylenol and put him down for the evening. He slept through the night without waking, but still had a slight fever when he woke up this morning, so we kept him home from daycare.

After a up and down day, where Mrs. LIAYF and I split the day at home with Luke, his fever suddenly jumped this evening. His temperature reached 103.9F, he was very lethargic, fussy and glassy-eyed. We called our local consulting nurse who advised us that in addition to teething, he is probably fighting a virus. The nurse also informed us that fevers above 103F cause some babies to have seizures! That was scary news and something we did not have to worry about all through his first year. So, as advised by the nurse, we dosed him up with Tylenol, gave him a luke-warm bath, and Mrs. LIAYF nursed him to sleep early. We have to wake him up at 10 and 2 to give him more 'baby-crack' to avoid a temperature spike while he sleeps.

He is sleeping soundly now. Wish him a speedy recovery!

p.s. Mrs. LIAYF wants you all to know we did NOT pose Lukas for a photo while he was feverish and sick. This is an archived photo!

There is nothing more distressing than an ill child. I hope he gets better soon.

Mini-Kamp wishes Lukas gets better soon.

FLUIDS! FLUIDS! FLUIDS! Keep him hydrated and sleep when you two can...don't assume you can get "it" later.

Ours are very "fevery" and have scared us repeatedly. They seem to be very "clingy" the couple of days after the fever.

Get ready for that after he gets better inside.

Thanks guys. and Mini-Kamp too! It was a difficult night with Luke awake several times and extremely hot (ear temp was at 105 once, but am not sure how accurate that was since we did under the arm and it was 103). He does seem to be a bit better this morning, but still tired and running a lower fever. My heart nearly skipped a beat when that temp read 105!)

Thanks for the advice as well MTE - This is really uncharted for us, since this is the first time his temp has been so high. It's nice to hear from someone who has been there before.

Nothing worse than seeing your kid suffer and feeling helpless. We've all been there, we all know what to expect, but it still sucks.

I hope he's feeling better soon.

I hope he's starting to feel better. Like the others, we know how hard it is to watch the little guy suffer. What amazes me is that they seem to face it so valiantly. I don't know if you've experienced this, but Cooper manages to be able to crack a smile and have a little fun even when we know he must feel like hell. I can't say that about myself.

We were freaked out by the first high fever, too. The lethargy, limpness, and glassy eyes were frightening, but we learned quickly what a wonder drug Tylenol seems to be for the little ones.

Get well soon, Lukas!

@Sci-Fi - Thanks so much. Yes, he is feeling a bit better today, but still running a high fever and definitely not himself.

@Rob - Absolutely. I am amazed at how we can still get him to giggle in the midst of crying, or at least crack a smile even when he is feeling his worst. We just can't help but repeat the mantra of how good a little boy he is when he can do those things when he is feeling so terrible.

Welcome to my world. Z-Dub's ear infection related high temps are legendary. We've had frequent 104 and 105+ temps resulting in frantic ER visits. The kid practically lives on Tylenol and Ibuprofen. It's horrible.

@VegasDad - That is crazy! I'm not sure I could take that. I about freaked when he hit 105 that night. I think the ear temp was a bit off, but he was burning up and it was scary. I hope Z-dub is getting past that stage for all your sake.
