Art (Over) Appreciation

We got another one today. And a couple the day before that. So, while I'm typing this, I am also opening a Craigslist page. I'm looking for a bigger refrigerator. A much bigger refrigerator.

Why? Because I am not sure where else am I supposed to store the endless stream of 'artwork' that is shipped home from Luke's daycare on an almost daily basis.

Yes I know, these pieces are all precious, one of a kind, works of art created with love and affection by my talented 2 year old. But really, this is getting out of hand. Especially since it seems wrong to chuck any of them out.

Whenever I think about doing just that, I can't bring myself to do it. My logic ends with something like: "Awww, we created Lukas....and he created these. How amazing is that? I can totally see where he was going with those scribbles! "

Then back on the shelf they go.

So, for lack of a proper place to display them, these art pieces are beginning to pile up faster than the dust bunnies under Mrs. LIAYF and my bed. And it's like Watership Down under there.

Something needs to be done. I can see that people aren't giving away any big refrigerators. And honestly, I don't have the room for one anyway. However, I have heard about people getting animals to create art pieces, then selling them. Sometimes for big bucks.

Hmmm. The artwork would go to a good home where it would be loved like it deserves to be, and I might make a few bucks in the process. Now we're talking.

Seems like a Win Win scenario to me. While I'm at it I think I'll also sell ice to the Eskimos. I'll just have to get Lukas to carve it into fun shapes first.

I have this nice idea about creating a wall of artwork - all our sons' creations neatly displayed in rows and rows of frames...

Or you could just stuff them under the bed with the dust bunnies.

Let him pick out a bunch to send to each of your relatives. That way they go to a good home and you don't have to feel guilty about putting them in the circular file.

Oh yea! I was thinking of a good answer, but of course--The relatives! They'll feel like the Moses getting the Good Book directly from God on the mountain when they see these things and find out they get to keep them. Teach him to hand the art directly to them, and they'll really feel like chosen people.

The relatives are perfect. You can see which one's will ask you to stop first. It will be cool, if you are there at Thanksgiving to ask if you can see something to see if they kept it...

My daughter is prolific like your son with the art work (just wait until they have words on them in his printing... makes them 20x cuter), to the point where I have a pile of art work on my top shelf at the office. I must admit to occasionally recycling some of the older/similar pieces; there's just no way to store them all.

Also, think of it this way: if you came across a series of boxes that contained every piece of art or craft from your early years, would it be any more impressive or meaningful than if you had come across a smaller box with a sampling?

I still have heaps of this stuff in boxes in my attic. Even after 15 years I can't bring myself to throw them away!
Giving them to rellies is always a good plan...if they have the room too? ;o)

I dunno what to say cause I like to keep em, my hubs who is a neat and clean freak will give them a 2 week shelf life and then they are reviewed for worthiness of storage and the rest are tossed. (But shhh, I try and keep some in my storage bins, but don't tell him okay?)

I put everything up on their own walls. Lot more space than your fridge.

They sell frames for children's artwork. But they only hold a few pages at a time. I have a MOUND of stuff. Most will get tossed. It is VERY hard to throw out my daughter's scribbles, but I will keep the more "special" creations.

I read in a magazine that you can go through the artwork, keep a few of the best, scan the rest and burn a CD of them. I have yet to decide on the keepers - that's the hard part!

I was going to say start a wall o'art, but it appears I have been beaten to it several times already. Hey, if that doesn't work out, you could create an online gallery of the art and start the bidding :)

I saved every piece of artwork my oldest two had ever done! Er, yeah and by the time my littlest one arrived, I had boxes and boxes full. I ended up sorting through them all and keeping only the favorites. *sniff* Still coming to terms with having to dispose of the precious pics!

It's a real tester this one isn't it. I have run out of storage space and the walls of the play room are already covered in selected artworks of our offspring.

I'm thinking that maybe if I can make a reasonably comfortable mattress out of them all by the time I need a new bed, I will have recycled, saved money and not thrown them away!
